Some businesses start with a business plan. Deer-Terrent started with a snowstorm.

It was the winter of 2017. A major storm was bearing down on our small rural town on the Delaware River in New Jersey — thirty inches of snow in the forecast. I looked out at my newly planted arborvitae trees and knew exactly what was coming. The deer population around here is relentless, and a heavy winter storm pushes them to feed on anything green they can find. My arborvitae were sitting ducks.

I drove to Home Depot. Then Lowe's. Then every local hardware store I could find. I searched Amazon, Walmart, everywhere. I was looking for something simple — lightweight netting that could wrap around a tree, protect it from deer, and actually be easy to install. It didn't exist. What I found instead was stiff black plastic fencing that fought me every step of the way. I struggled with it in the cold, made a mess of it, and eventually gave up and went back inside feeling completely defeated.

Then the entrepreneurial spirit spoke up — the way it always does when there's a problem nobody has solved yet. It said: opportunity.

I've been a serial entrepreneur since 1990, so I know that voice well. I listened to it.

It took a good year to get the product right — the right fabric weight, the right mesh size, the right attachment system. Light enough to be barely visible on a plant. Strong enough that a deer can't bite or push through it. Easy enough that anyone can install it in a few minutes without tools. When we finally had it dialed in, Deer-Terrent was born.

Today we make a full line of deer protection netting for homeowners, gardeners, and professional landscapers — from individual plant covers to bulk rolls that protect entire rows of arborvitae. Every product is designed around the same idea that started it all: protecting the plants you've worked hard to grow, without the hassle of sprays, ugly fences, or complicated installations.
